Types of Car Polishing Machines

At first glance, there appears to be at least 5 different types of car polisher machine on the market. Rotary polisher, dual action polisher, DA polisher, random orbital polisher and orbital polisher. Additionally, they can be air powered, mains powered or cordless.

The good news is that despite the confusion, there are basically 2 types: Rotary polishers and then, all the others are just different names for the same thing.

Rotary Polishers

Rotary Polishers are straightforward to understand in that the polishing pad has a direct drive from the motor. This means that all of the power from the motor is used, enabling quite deep scratches to be cut out of the paintwork.

Rotary polishers tend to be the domain of the professional as they require a lot of skill and experience to avoid damaging the paintwork.

Dual Action Polishers / DA Polishers

DA Polishers have a rotating head that “Orbits” (hence orbital polisher or random orbital polisher) on 2 axes (hence dual action polisher or DA polisher for short) rather than rotating on just 1 axis like the rotary polisher. The first axis rotates the head concentrically around the motor driveshaft. The second axis rotates the pad on the head!

The upshot is that the buffing pad oscillates or wobbles. This wobbling prevents the pad from spinning in the same place on the paintwork for too long. This, in turn, reduces the risk of damaging the paintwork 🙂

Dual Action Polishers or DA Polishers are ideal for non-professionals as they allow you to maintain your car paintwork in tip-top condition without the risk of burning through the paint or leaving swirls all over your car. It is not possible to cut out deep scratches with a DA Polisher.
