Many classic cars are reasonably straightforward to work on yourself. All you need is a practical approach, some basic tools and an interest in tinkering!
Classic cars and their engines
I have written a few articles about how to carry out various tests on engines for classic cars. Compression testing is a reasonably easy test to carry out but can tell you so much about the condition of your engine. The next step up, is the Cylinder leak down test, which really helps to accurately pin down the cause of problems in the engine. In diagnosing engine noises, I explain how I used these tools, and others, to find out where the problems lay with my Lotus Twin Cam engine.
There are many other diagnostic tools that are cheap to buy and easy to use. Understanding what they tell you is often where the difficulty comes in. Vacuum gauges, multimeters and timing lights; I will write articles about how to use each of these in the future.
